Did I Say That?

Around this time every year, it's always fun to take a look back at some of the things that were written on the BDBL forum and laugh at them.  Since I don't have any better ideas for this month's column, here are some gems I discovered, followed by some snarky comments.  Enjoy.

"The Cubs signed NEIFI PEREZ to a 2 year, $5 million contract!!!! Does that mean Super Ronny Cedeno won't get a chance?

There's no way Perez can last all next year as the starting SS, is there?"

-- Tom DiStefano, 11/15/05

Well, Tom got his wish.  Neifi was eventually traded (but not until August 20th.)  But as the old saying goes, "Be careful what you wish for."  "Super Ronny" took over for Neifi, all right...and picked up right where he left off:

Sub-par Ronny: .242/.269/.335
Sub-par Neifi: .243/.261/.318

Eerie, isn't it?  Only their mothers can tell them apart.

"Happy now, Sharky?

50-game suspension for a first offense, lifetime ban for a third (for testing positive for steroids.)

I'd love nothing more than to see home runs go UP next year."

-- Mike Glander, 11/15/05

MLB stats as of 9/28:

2006: 5,268 home runs in 163,395 at-bats (31.0 AB/HR.)
2005: 5,017 home runs in 166,335 at-bats (33.2 AB/HR.)

Clearly, what MLB needs is MORE testing!!  Who's with me??  Sharky?

"Given that I'm paying $7 million for I-Rod's putrid numbers next year, I'll gladly take those numbers (.275/.333/.425 projected stats for Kenji Johjima) for $100k."

-- Mike Glander, 11/23/05

Johjima's actual stats (as of 9/28): .291/.334/.455.  Looks like that projection was pretty much dead-on.  Remember all that silly talk about how Johjima couldn't communicate with his pitchers?  Good times.

"Hahaha, broken down Thome to clog up the White Sox lineup."

-- Mike Stein's reaction to the MLB Jim Thome trade on 11/23/05

"Why would you give up 2 of your best prospects in the deal?  Rowand straight-up should be good enough to get a broken down Thome."

-- Scott Romonosky's reaction to the same deal, 11/23/05

Jim "Broken Down" Thome: 483 AB, .290/.419/.605, 42 HR, 108 RBI
Aaron "Broken Nose" Rowand: 405 AB, .262/.321/.425, 12 HR, 47 RBI

Ironically enough, it is Stein who will benefit from Thome in 2007, since he paid $5 million for him last winter.  Maybe all that time, Stein was just pulling the ol' Peburn-like trash-and-cash prank.

"Gene gets some innings (by taking Glendon Rusch off of Tom's hands,) but some REALLY crappy innings: 145 IP, 175 hits allowed, 14 homers, 53 walks and a 4.97 ERC. That's beyond ugly. Granted, he's only $1.5m, but it couldn't be too difficult to find someone like that in the draft for $1m or $500k."

-- Mike Glander, 11/25/05

"Have you looked at how many IP I have under contract for next year? This is all about quantity over quality here. And you know Rusch will be worth a little bit more than his numbers because of his reverse splits (in my opinion.)"

-- Gene Patterson, 11/25/05

Glendon Rusch's BDBL stats (as of 9/28): 4-2, 5.32 ERA, 94.2 IP, 123 H, 33 BB, 76 K.

For less than half the cost of Rusch's $1.5m salary, the Fire Ants could have drafted:

  • Brian Meadows ($500k): 4-2, 4.30 ERA in 69 IP

  • Pedro Astacio ($500k): 9-4, 2.25 ERA in 124 IP

  • John Wasdin ($500k): 4-6, 4.18 ERA in 64.1 IP

  • Wandy Rodriguez ($500k): 3-4, 4.03 ERA in 80.1 IP

  • Orlando Hernandez ($100k): 3-5, 4.25 ERA in 95.1 IP

  • Mark Hendrickson ($100k): 10-11, 4.05 ERA in 160 IP

Or, Atlanta could have simply used an innings-eater like Sidney Ponson (who wouldn't have performed much worse than Rusch), and spent the remaining $1.4 million on guys like Josh Johnson, Edinson Volquez, Jeremy Accardo, Frank Thomas, Yuniesky Betancourt, etc..  My original point stands: There are much better ways to spend your money than by contributing to the DiStefano trash collection service.

"Allentown sends prospects Asdrubal Cabrera and Matt Whitney to Akron for Oliver Perez, David Riske, and Travis Denker."

-- Tom DiStefano, 11/25/05

"Man, what a day Tom is having at the trading table, eh? Looks like he's loading up very nicely for another run at another trophy. Should be another fun year for all you Eck Leaguers."

-- Mike Glander, 11/25/05

"So when Cabrera starts putting up solid major league numbers, are you going to go on and on about how 'lucky' DJ was? About how you, me, and everyone in between knew Cabrera sucked and his success was a bizarre fluke?"

-- Tom DiStefano, 6/30/06

Ass-drubal update: .249/.310/.349, with 4 HR and 90 K's in 393 AB.

You know what, if this guy ever posts "solid" major league numbers, I will go on and on about how "lucky" DJ is.  Because there is absolutely nothing in this guy's track record to suggest that he'll ever post solid MLB numbers.

Meanwhile, Riske was later traded to Marlboro for Bret Tomko, Jose Molina and Brian Shouse.  Perez's $1.1 million penalty was dumped on New Hope's doorstep.  And Tomko was then traded (along with Eric Hurley) for Milton Bradley.  So, in the end, Tom ended up with Bradley, Molina, Shouse and Denker in exchange for...Assdrubal and Matt Shitney (.206/.294/.362 in 345 High-A at-bats.)

And you wonder how the Ridgebacks end up in contention every year?

"We look to Jeter as a foundation at the 2-hole in our lineup for the next 4 years, taking a chance on his long term contract. We realized that we have no SS depth in our system and none on the horizon, so we are confident that Derek will be an offensive catalyst for us for the years to comes."

-- Sharky, 11/25/05 (following the acquisition of Derek Jeter)

Less than six months later, Jeter was traded for a free-agent-to-be.  But, on the plus side, that freed up some salary for the Hammerheads in '07.  Have you heard?  They have upwards of $55 million to spend!

"I think it is more than a slight upgrade (from Danny Haren to Chris Carpenter.) The bottom line is, would you feel comfortable throwing Haren in Game One of the World Series? I wouldn't. Carpenter would make me feel much more comfortable."

-- Anthony Peburn, 12/1/05

Haren: 13-10, 3.47 ERA, 187 IP, 174 H, 51 BB, 141 K
Carpenter: 17-9, 3.76 ERA, 215.2 IP, 213 H, 46 BB, 221 K

$8.9 million doesn't buy nearly as much comfort as it used to.

"The Marlins are looking like the Blazers of last year in dumping everything not tied down."

-- Anthony Peburn, 12/2/05

"Are the Marlins fielding a AAA team next year or what?"

-- Gene Patterson, 12/2/05

That Triple-A team is now 77-81, and was in the hunt for a wild card for most of the season.  One of baseball's more amazing stories over the last 25 years.

"I can't figure out how this trade (Chipper Jones, Jeff Cirillo and Yorvit Torrealba to New Milford for Aaron Small, Chris Crapuano, Rich Aurilia, Abe Nunez and Magglio Ordonez) helps Bear Country. I don't think any one of those guys is a long-term keeper. Unless the Jamboree plan on going from 108 losses to the playoffs in one year, I just don't see how this helps them."

-- Mike Glander, 12/3/05

"Mike, ready to give Chris Capuano any props?

101 IP, 93 K, 3.30 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, .249/.294/.387, peek age at 27 and a LH.  Looking like a great $1m bargain. Guess using the phrase 'Crapuano' is not longer warranted."

-- Sharky, 6/17/06

Crapuano since 6/17: 115.1 IP, 126 H, 21 BB, 79 K, 4.37 ERA.  Ahh...that's more like it.  Mr. Mean, meet Mr. Regression.

"The Yankees lost between $50 million and $85 million for the 2005 season, according to a Daily News report. In addition to their $200 million+ payroll, the Yankees poured almost $110 million into revenue sharing and luxury tax last season. Also, the Yankees might have to share additional revenue with poorer clubs if a consultant hired by MLB decides they undervalued their television rights. This is why the Yankees have yet to look like big players on the free-agent market.

Looks like the end for the Yankees playoff run? Will have to go back to developing young players again. Could be decades before they win again."

-- Sharky, 12/4/05

Oh, Sharky.  Don't hate the player.  Hate the game.

"Did the Badgers just pay $6 million for that load of crap? (Brian Shouse, Kelly Stinnett, Bobby Kielty and Odalis Perez.)

...there is a definite value in having cost certainty in pre-draft planning. But I think that while you eliminate the risk of overpaying for someone, you also miss out on the opportunity of possibly underpaying.

...these aren't studs we're talking about here. These guys are easily replaceable in the later rounds of the draft. If another team is willing to PAY just to get a player off its roster, I don't know why you'd want to go out of your way to acquire that player without asking for anything in return."

-- Mike Glander, 12/5/05

"I predicted that someone would complain about this when I was talking to Tom.

I have my token lefty in the bullpen, for less than I probably would have picked one up in the draft. Kielty fills a corner OF hole I had and, when pared with Lew Ford, is a very good platoon. Stinnett is a capable backup for Bengie, and can hit the righties Molina can't. Perez is a write-off.

...Having these players NOW means I can draft ANOTHER player in the round you would say I could get a comparable player...I have a completely different way to spend my money than you do, Mike."

-- Tony Badger, 12/5/05

"As with the Ponson deal last year, I totally support Tony."

-- John Duel, 12/6/06

Slowly I turn...step by step...inch by inch...

Shouse: Released at a penalty of $800,000
Stinnett: .273/.333/.409 with 14.8 RC in 110 AB's
Kielty: .313/.367/.530 with 30.0 RC in 166 AB's
Perez: Released at a penalty of $1.1 million

The Badgers traded Rob Quinlan and DJ Houlton (two $100k players) for these four waste products.  So they spent a total of $4.3 million ($1.9 million in penalties, plus $2.6 million in salary)...for a total of 276 at-bats.  Was this trade payback for some sort of personal favor?  Did Badger lose a bet, maybe?

I repeat: There are much better ways to spend your money than by taking Tom's unwanted trash off his hands.  Seriously.  People think I pick on Tom too much, but it's shit like this that makes me nuts.

"I might get mocked for this but...according the the system I use to evaluate minor league players, Kendrick is a grade 'C+' prospect.

...The system I use gives players "scores" ranging (roughly) from 1 to 100 (with 50 being average, obviously). Here is how Kendrick and Cedeno fared the last 2 years:

Kendrick 2004 = 52
Cedeno 2004 = 50

Kendrick 2005 = 59
Cedeno 2005 = 58 "

-- Tom DiStefano, 12/6/06

You're right, Tom.  You'll get mocked for it.  I think it's time to recalibrate that system of yours.

"I feel sorry for the poor sap who is going to shell out huge $$ for Clemens and then sit around the computer every day to see if he signs and where.

The thing is, you may have to hold your breath all the way to May to see if he comes back to Houston.

...Someone will take a HUGE gamble that he will retire.

My feeling is that he will re-sign with Houston and pull his hamstring after 8 starts and then retire.

I don't think the team that signs Clemens is going to get as lucky as Bobby did this year. I really do think Clemens will miss time with a hamstring injury this year. Our 2006 team will probably not have Clemens, but you never know."

-- Anthony Peburn, 12/12/05

Just curious: Has anyone ever fallen for this transparent ruse in any rotisserie league you've ever participated in, Anthony?

"We are taking a hit in the power department (Helton/Niekro combined for 32 HRs) but (Brian) Giles gives us more balance since he hits LHs and RHs equally well. Moving into a pitchers park this season, we are looking for players with high OBP and Giles fits that description, ranking 4th in overall OBP (.423) and 4th in OBP vs. RHs (.431) with players over 150 PAs. He also lead the majors in walks last year with 119."

-- Sharky, 12/14/05

"Giles is also available for some more power. Love the guy, great #2 hitter, very good OBP, but 1 HR, please. He kills me."

-- Sharky, 4/17/06

Yes, that's the same guy quoted above.  Roughly four months later.  No, I can't explain it either.  Yes, I do think it's hilariously entertaining.

"Wow! Villanova gave Harden 9 years and Greinke 7!!

That 9 year contract was the longest ever given to a BDBL pitcher."

-- Tom DiStefano, 12/21/05

Poor Tony.

"I heard today on ESPN Radio in Chicago (1000 AM) that the Cubs are waiting to hear back from the Baltimore Orioles on the following deal:

Mark Prior, Rich Hill and Corey Patterson for Miguel Tejada and Eric Bedard.

Unless I am missing something, the following two things have to happen: 1) Cubs GM Jim Hendry should be fired immediately for making the offer. 2) The Orioles GM should be fired immediately for not jumping out of his shoes to accept the offer.

97 years and still counting."

-- John Gill, 12/23/05

It's amazing how many seemingly lopsided trades often don't look nearly as lopsided in retrospect.  This is certainly one of those trades.  Would anyone trade Erik Bedard for Mark Prior at this point?  I know I wouldn't.  And Tejada for Hill and Patterson?  I think that's do-able, too!

"My prediction is that Tejada has the worst year of his career, regardless of whether he is traded or not."

-- Mike Glander, 12/29/05

Tejada's .330 batting average (as of 9/28) is a career high.  And his 880 OPS is the second-highest average in his career.  Oops.

"Is there a BDBL Farm Draft curse on #1 picks?

1999: Rick Ankiel
2000: Luis Rivas
2001: Adam Johnson
2002: Kaz Ishii
2003: Jose Contreras
2004: Maels Rodriguez
2005: Brandon McCarthy"

-- Mike Glander, 12/30/05

"I still think my 2005 #1 is a good pick. His first year stats are promising and his post-all-star stats are amazing (and, I hope, the sign of things to come). So I'll say no to the #1 curse."

-- John Duel, 12/30/05

McCarthy: 84.2 IP, 77 H, 17 HR, 33 BB, 69 K, 4.68 ERA.

Okay, maybe it's more of a "hex" than a curse.

"I told myself if I only got Durant I would consider it a good draft, so I didn't want to risk waiting to round two (although it sounds like he wasn't on anyone's radar). I just hope he pans out."

-- John Duel, 1/2/06, commenting on his #1 farm pick, Michael Durant

Michael Durant update: .226/.333/.290 in the Gulf Coast League, 7-for-31, with 0 homers, 3 walks and 14 strikeouts.

I still don't have the foggiest idea who he is.

"There aren't too many guys in this draft capable of hitting .280/.330/.480 as early as next year."

-- Mike Glander, 1/3/06

"O RLY?  Dan Uggla, who might very well be starting at 2B for the Marlins this year, could come close."

-- Mike Stein, 1/3/06

"Uggla hit .297/.378/.502 in Double-A as a 25-year-old. That's an MLE of .251/.305/.420. I guess he could come close, but my money's on Iwamura posting a higher OPS in 2007 than Uggla."

-- Mike Glander, 1/3/06

Oh, me with my silly statistics and logic.

"Have you even looked at my team to see what my needs are and how much cash I have to spend? ...if you want to comment on my team, at least take the time to look at my needs and what my bids were before you try to make some intelligent statement on how I should be bidding up certain players.

OOOOKKKKKK??? As Fred from That 70's Show would say, 'Dumbass.'"

-- Chris Luhning, 1/7/06, reacting to Tom's assertion
that he should have bid on Mike Piazza

Apparently, catching wasn't a pressing need for the Law Dogs this year.  Not when they had Adam LaRoche (114 innings) and Reed Johnson (12 innings) to fill that void behind the plate.

"You know, it is funny that there are only four teams in the league that have never made it to the post-season, and two of those teams have been crowing the loudest on this board for an awful long time.

Here's a prediction you can print out and stick on your clubhouse message board: Neither the Blazers nor the Rocks will make it to the post-season in 2006."

-- Mike Glander, 1/12/06

So far, I'm one for two.  The jury's still out on the Blazers.  (And if there is a Baseball God, they will be watching the playoffs from the sidelines with the rest of us this November.)

"I like my chances for (Jason Schmidt) to be worth more than 10 million next season! He's been worth much more in previous years. And I like starting pitchers with slug %'s under .400 against both righties and lefties."

-- Jeff Paulson, 1/12/06

Jason Schmidt: 207.1 IP, 183 H, 20 HR, 77 BB, 173 K, 3.56 ERA.

Yeah, that was a pretty good gamble.

"I can't wait to see Teixeira's HR total in my ballpark (with a LH HR factor of 81.) That was the main reason I wanted to switch parks this winter, but Greg wouldn't let me."

-- Mike Glander, 1/12/06

Teixeira, MLB: 43 HR in 644 AB (15 AB per HR)
Teixeira, BDBL: 28 HR in 503 AB (18 AB per HR)

Yep, I guess that's about right.  Imagine how much he'll suck next year!

"First, let me clarify one point. I'm under no illusions I should 'go for it' in 2006. Look at my team. An offense full of versatile and cheap low-to-mid 700 OPS guys. Not a great offense. Only 3 pitchers going into the auction, in which I picked up no pitchers despite willing to spend a lot on two of the available starters.

I need pitching, and someone with lots of innings I can throw out there. Westbrook will handle that, and I have no commitment for 2007. He's also a pretty good pitcher for this year. The fact he didn't crack the Top 50, and Kyle Lohse can, was crazy. If he works out for next year, great! If not, I'll pick up a guy next year."

-- Tony Badger, 1/13/06, defending his draft pick of Jake Westbrook

Nine months later, the Badgers are a .500 team, and Westbrook is 12-8 with a 4.31 ERA.

"Ausmus was a great pick for the Rebels at 3 million...Granted, I will have some ugly holes but I should be very competitive in about 80% of 2006 BDBL games."

-- Jim Doyle, 1/14/06

"Jim took Brad Ausmus in the SIXTH ROUND at $3 million. Compare his numbers vs. RH's to Chad Moeller, who's still on the board:

Ausmus: 341 PA, .247/.332/.302
Moeller: 164 PA, .215/.272/.369

Ausmus hits better against lefties, but so what? You only face a lefty maybe 30% of the time. That's certainly not worth $2.9 million."

-- Mike Glander, 1/20/06

"Hey Commish, if we were talking about DHs then I would agree but there is a reason why they are called CATCHERS."

-- Jim Doyle, 1/20/06

Brad Ausmus: .216/.308/.251 in 334 AB, 0 E's, 3 PB's, 30% CS
Chad Moeller: .204/.257/.358 in 137 AB, 2 E's, 0 PB's, 34% CS

Explain again, Jim, why Ausmus is being paid $2.9 million more than Moeller?

"You (Tom) have Patton, Wood, Bruce, Dukes, A.Jones, Andrus, Bianchi, Duncan, W.Davis and Teagarden ranked (among your top 50 prospects), while I've ranked Weaver, Reyes, Milledge, Markakis, Pelfrey, Kubel, Jojima, Volquez, A.Miller, Mock, Nippert, Clement, Pedroia, C.Gonzalez, Maybin, Nelson, Sowers and Carillo."

-- Mike Glander, 1/31/06

Well, I missed on Jay Bruce and Wade Davis, but Tom missed on Jared Weaver, Nick Markakis, Mike Pelfrey, Kenji Johjima, Adam Miller, Carlos Gonzalez, Cameron Maybin and Jeromy Sowers.  All in all, I'd say my system is beating Tom's system so far.

"I know I say this every year, but I really think trading will be significantly reduced this year."

-- Mike Glander, 2/15/06

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!

You know, I really need to stop saying that every year.

"Here is an offer (Mike) made to me (I have his permission to post it). I have turned it down but he suggested we put it to a vote so okay...

Edison Volquez, Chris Resop and Akinori Otsuka for Cory Lidle, Mike Lieberthal and Jason Frasor.

...All the stats and reports are nice but what you are failing to address Mike is the damage that this trade does to me NOW. I don't want to lose 110 games.

If I trade away Lieberthal and don't get a comparable catcher in return then I now am forced to go make a trade to acquire a catcher - you we know how that scenario works....and in all likely hood someone would want a younger 23 year old in trade for a good catcher."

-- Gene Patterson, 2/17/06

Gene ruined the punch line by reanimating this topic on our forum recently, but I'll repeat it again, just for laughs:

Mike Lieberthal: .217/.274/.397 in 373 AB

All things considered, I was better off with Chad Moeller!

"Well, Mike got (Mike Piazza.) Unfortunately he picked the worst team to play for and most likely won't come anywhere close to being worth $3.5m next year. I don't get this deal from Salem's end. Teams will run on Piazza like there is no tomorrow (I know; I had him last year).  I think Mike reached for Volquez in the draft, but afterwards a few lists had him as Tex's best prospect. Great deal for Bear Country in my opinion."

-- Sharky, 2/25/06

Another bad prediction from our resident undersea breakfast treat.

"...(Ryan) Zimmerman hit a grand total of SEVEN home runs COMBINED in three years of college ball...with a metal bat! ...I'll be shocked if Zimmerman hits 10 this year-- especially in RFK."

-- Mike Glander, 3/6/06

Color me shocked.

"If Rolen isn't healthy (and early indications are mixed), this will be a HORRIBLE trade for Chicago. Rolen may never be a $10m player again, but he could be a $5-$7m player for the next few years."

-- Mike Glander, 3/9/06

"Zambrano can go onto improve each year and win multiple Cy Youngs, Rolen can return to a .900 OPS and Ex defense, Hansen can be this years Huston Street. If all 3 happen, it would be a steal for Chicago."

-- Sharky, 3/9/06

Rolen is hitting .294/.367/.513 on the season (as of 9/28), with 46 doubles and 21 homers.  Zambrano owns a 3.43 ERA and 806/553 splits in over 200 innings.  You know, with all the attention given to the Blazers, and the way they've blown up the future of their franchise this season, the Hammerheads have been right there with them every step of the way (though slightly less drastic.)

"(Alfonso) Soriano's an a-hole, but (Jim) Bowden's the biggest a-hole in this scenario, if you ask me. He screwed up so royally by not talking to Soriano prior to the trade to ensure that he'd be willing to switch positions. Trading Brad Wilkerson for Soriano (and getting two prospects thrown in 'just to make it even!') was a MAJOR mistake. This whole mess just makes it that much worse."

-- Mike Glander, 3/21/06

Alfonso Soriano: .279/.353/.564 in 642 AB's, with 41 2B, 46 HR and 41 SB
Brad Wilkerson: .222/.306/.422 in 320 AB's, with 15 2B, 15 HR and 3 SB

Could it be that Jim Bowden isn't as much of a moron as we all presumed he is??

Nah...he just got lucky.

"For some reason, I like Detroit as a surprise contender this year. Don't really have a reason for it."

-- Mike Glander, 3/30/06

You win some...

"Aside from Santana and Mauer, there just isn't anything in Minnesota worth getting excited about.  (Predicted finish: 4th place.)"

-- Mike Glander, 3/30/06

...and you lose some.

"Detroit is a team to watch. I wouldn't be surprised if they finished 3rd or even 2nd."

-- Scott Romonosky, 3/30/06

Of course, I wasn't the only one who pulled that prediction out of my ass.

"(Nolan Reimold) is now batting 409/480/727 and also 3 SB. We all knew he had power, but the speed aspect now makes him the total package. Potential 40/40? I think 30/30 would be more realistic in the show."

-- Anthony Peburn, 4/14/06

Reimold: .255/.379/.455, with 19 HR and 14 SB in High-A

Potential 40/40?  Really?  But you think that, being as conservative as possible, maybe 30/30?  You think that's more "realistic," do ya?  Mmm-hmm...

"Adding (Dustin) Hermanson was a must in this deal as we gave up our primary starting center fielder (Willy Taveras.)  (In addition to Hermanson, SoCal received Jason Marquis and Kevin Millar.)  Both Taveras and (Orlando) Cabrera will give the Sphinx a good one-two in their lineup next year."

-- Bob Sylvester, 6/1/06

"Willy Taveras and Orlando Cabrera? Don't they kind of (excuse my language) suck?"

-- Tom DiStefano, 6/1/06

Cabrera: .280/.333/.401 in 601 AB, 44 2B, 9 HR, 27 SB
Taveras: .279/.335/.341 in 513 AB, 19 2B, 1 HR, 33 SB

Well...Taveras sorta sucks...

"I hate it when you find a farm player (Casey Janssen), take the ridicule when you move him, only to watch him perform beyond even what you expected right off the bat."

-- Sharky, 6/17/06

Jansssssen's stats, since 6/17: 35 IP, 52 H, 13 BB, 13 K, 7.46 ERA

The only thing I love more than small sample sizes is the way that Sharky overreacts to them.

"The Funkadelic send Estaban Loaiza to Allentown for Randy Wolf."

-- Steve Osborne, 7/10/06

"So...a guy who posted a 3.17 ERA in over 200 innings last season was just traded for a guy who hasn't pitched in a year. Nice.

Christ. Randy Wolf has a $1 million salary...and has to be signed at the end of the year.

I'm dying to know, Steve: What on earth are you thinking here?"

-- Mike Glander, 7/10/06

Wolf's stats: 55 IP, 58 H, 11 HR, 32 BB, 44 K, 5.24 ERA.  Is he a keeper at $1 million?  Is he worth Esteban Loaiza?

Here's a tip, Steve: The next time you lose a key series, and you've had a few too many Coronas, and Tom starts PM'ing you with trade offers, step away from the computer.

"Nashville has completed their garage sale by moving Jermaine Dye to Villanova. In addition to Dye, the Funk has traded Chris Duffy and Chris Young to the Mustangs for Curtis Granderson...Granderson can solidify our OF in 2007 and we can concentrate on other spots. Doesn't appear to be much in the way of free agents to pick from either. I don't mind parting with a prospect to fill a hole instantly - hopefully Granderson does that."

This was a bad week for Steve.

Curtis Granderson, since 7/11: .244/.297/.394, with 6 HR and 71 K's in 246 AB's.

Meanwhile, Chris Young hit .276/.363/.532, with 32 doubles and 21 homers in 402 AB's at Triple-A, and is hitting .246 with two homers in his MLB debut.  Looks like this trade may look more lopsided in Villanova's favor sooner than anyone expected.

"I was actually high on (Willy) Aybar. I still think he is going to be a very good major leaguer if he ever gets the chance."

-- Ed McGowan, 7/26/06

"We think Aybar is a very nice player, our top secret scoring system had him doing VERY well the last 2 season in AA and AAA and don't forget he is just 23...Abreu has frankly sucked for me. 273/360/406 - he's OPS is 113 points below his RL and we are talking a two chapter rental...I think Aybar has a lot of potential. PCL or not he has tore up AAA the last two years. Last year in Sept. did great and again this year has produced - though he has struggled vs. LHP - but he is still just 23 freakin years. I mean 23 years old and already up with the big club."

Willy Mo Aybar's stats to date: .282/.367/.408 in 238 AB's.

...But he's still only 23 freakin' years old!!!!
